The Chinese dance epic “The East Is Red” will be staged in Shenzhen later this month by the Beijing-based Song and Dance Ensemble of General Political Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
The song-and-dance show, which made its debut in 1964, was created on the initiative of late Chinese leader Zhou Enlai to mark the 15th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Nearly all of China’s best singers, dancers and musicians of that time took part in the show.
Employing songs, dances and poetry, it depicts the arduous struggle of the Chinese people to achieve victory over hardships.
With 3,000 performers, 29 choreographers and exquisite stage design, “The East Is Red” is a Chinese classic. In 1965, it was made into a musical film and received accolades in China and abroad.
The current multimedia production uses archival and feature film footage. Apart from music from the 1960s, new songs include “Story of Spring” and “Step Into the New Epoch.”
