The Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway hit musical “The Sound of Music” will be performed in Shenzhen for seven consecutive nights in mid-July.
“The Sound of Music” tells the story of Maria, who, after proving too highly spirited for the other nuns in her Austrian convent, is sent off to work as a governess for the unruly children in the Von Trapp family. Captain Von Trapp ultimately realizes that he is in love with Maria. This begins a very happy chapter in the lives of this newly formed family.
The musical, composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, appeared on Broadway on Nov. 19, 1959. The show ran for 1,443 performances and captured seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The score of “The Sound of Music” has become an indelible part of Western popular consciousness, including songs “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss.”
