Percussion lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy two nights of performances next month presented by Taiwan’s Ju Percussion Group (JPG).
Founded by percussionist Ju Tzong-ching in 1986, JPG was the first percussion ensemble established in Taiwan. It consists of 13 talented percussionists and one composer in residence. The members possess transcendental virtuosity in playing Western percussion instruments as well as Chinese percussion and other forms of traditional Asian music.
The group has become well-known around the world for its innovative blending of East and West, traditional and contemporary. The group has pioneered the development of the percussive arts in Taiwan. Through more than 100 local and international performances annually, reaching audiences of about 150,000, JPG has put Taiwan on the international percussion map.
The wide popularity of percussion music in Taiwan owes a great deal to Ju, the group’s artistic director, for his pioneering efforts in music education.
Ju has studied with Walter Veigl and Richard Hochrainer, former principal percussionist of the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Vienna Academy of Music. After returning to Taiwan in 1982, Ju served as principal percussionist for the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.
