Free-fall tortoise a smash hit

A TORTOISE fell from a high-rise building and hit a parked car, smashing the windshield in Futian District on Sunday.

Nobody was in the car at the time of the accident. The tortoise, thought to have been trying to escape, was injured and was rescued by the building management office, which has not yet found the owner, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday.

A witness surnamed Chen said she saw a black object falling through the air when she was passing an apartment building in the Huigang Ming Yuan Housing Estate on Binhe Road at about 8 a.m. Sunday.

"I heard a big bang and then found a tortoise lying on a sedan," she said.

Another witness surnamed Shi said the tortoise was about 15 centimeters long and weighed at least 1.5 kilograms.

"Its abdominal shell was broken and bleeding," he said. "It struggled in pain."

The tortoise would have fallen from an apartment above the 20th floor, judging from the damage of the car, the report said.

Nobody has claimed the tortoise. The management office has not identified the car owner.
