“Moon Over Helan Mountain,” a dance drama featuring the history of the Hui ethnic group and ancient Ningxia, will be performed on stage in Shenzhen early next month.
The drama, paying tribute to ethnic solidarity, is to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the capital of which is Yinchuan City.
Presented by the Yinchuan Opera House, the drama depicts the love story between two people with different religious backgrounds and customs. On the ancient Silk Road, a group of caravans coming from the Western Region, arrives at Helan Mountain (in today’s Ningxia) after passing through the desert and crossing the Yellow River. A young man from the Western Region falls in love with a local girl and finally they marry at the foot of Helan Mountain.
The Western Region or Xiyu (in today’s Xinjiang) was a historical name recorded in Chinese chronicles between the third century B.C. and eighth century A.D., referring to the region of Central Asia west of Dunhuang in today’s Gansu Province.
Because of its strategic location astride the Silk Road where Asia meets Europe, the Western Region has been historically significant as a cultural, economic and religious conductor.
