A total of 115 photographs of the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong taken by his official photographer Lu Houmin are on display at the Artron Art Gallery.
The exhibition, commemorating the 115th anniversary of the birth of Mao, features many of Lu’s black and white pieces and prize winners, including some never-before-published photo records.
Among them, highlights include “Mao Zedong in Lushan,” “Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai,” and “Mao Zedong Embraced by Artist Xie Xiumei.”
The photo, “Mao Zedong in Lushan,” was taken during Mao’s visit to Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi Province in the summer of 1961.
In the picture, Mao sits alone on a stone bench on top of the mountain, looking into the distance. The marvelous background — deep sky, white clouds, and mountains shrouded in mist — set the late Chinese leader’s silhouette off to advantage.
Another picture is of Mao and Premier Zhou Enlai, standing side by side, smiling intimately and handing papers to each other.
The picture conveys mutual understanding and harmony between the two most important leaders in China.
The photo, “Mao Zedong Embraced by Artist Xie Xiumei,” was taken in 1953 when Mao received the news that his son had died in the Korean War. The picture taken at the time turned out to be a rare record of Mao’s emotions.
