Plunge woman’s relatives look for answers

RELATIVES of Tan Jing, who died after falling from a 30th floor apartment in Guangzhou earlier this month, postponed her cremation because of doubts about the cause of her death, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Tan’s funeral was held Sunday. Police in Guangzhou said on April 14 that the death of Tan, 24, on April 4, was suicide as she accidentally fell out of the window after getting seriously drunk.

However, police have so far refused to give Tan’s autopsy report to her relatives. In addition, they had not told Tan’s relatives the exact cause of her death. The relatives learned that Tan’s death was claimed to be a suicide only through media reports, according to a friend of Tan who refused to give her name.

According to a lawyer, Tan’s mother had the right to see the report if Tan’s death was confirmed to be suicide.

Tan was wearing a bra and pink shorts and was drunk at the time of the fall. She died at the scene after hitting a beam on the 13th floor.

Tan was initially described as a sex worker who was thrown out of the window by three South Korean clients she took home, according to previous reports.

The police said Tan had fallen out of the window with her clothes on and her clothes had been “burst apart” by a broken window during the fall.

Tan’s relatives thought, however, that the trousers would have been torn into pieces instead of bursting apart and they were also not sure if the police had checked a wound on her body to see if it matched a tear in the trousers.

“We want to re-examine her body after getting the autopsy report, as there have been so many suspicious points about her death,” the friend said, speaking on behalf of Tan’s relatives.
