New city CPPCC head elected

    WANG SHUNSHENG, vice chairman of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), was elected chief of the city’s top advisory body at its closing session Saturday.

    Wang, 59, a graduate of the department of economics and political science of Renmin University, told reporters that he would work hard to promote relations among political parties, religious groups and compatriots in China and abroad.

    “As a local CPPCC chairman, one of my most important work is to promote national unification, to strengthen solidarity and develop the spirit of democracy,” said Wang.

    Wang, a former vice mayor of Shenzhen, served as Zhuhai mayor for five years before returning to the Shenzhen advisory body as a vice chairman in January last year.

    Li Decheng, former chairman of the local CPPCC for six years, submitted his resi-gnation prior to the closing session. The local CPPCC approved his request and highly praised his contributions, which included promoting cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

    Also at the closing session, Yao Xinyao, secretary general of the advisory body, was elected vice chairman of the local CPPCC and Tang Lixia, vice secretary general, was elected secretary general of the local CPPCC. Nine new members were added to the standing committee of the advisory body at the closing session.

    The local CPPCC received a total of 708 proposals during the annual session this year. More than 60 percent of the proposals were about the city’s economy, followed by proposals about education, culture, social insurance, medical insurance and the environment.

    Among all the proposals, more than 50 were about cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
