‘Right staff is critical’
Darryl Castner

AUSTRALIAN jeweler Darryl Castner believes that the key to running a successful business in Shenzhen is picking skilled, trustworthy staff.

Castner established his jewelry company, named Elegant Gold Jewelry, in Shatoujiao Free Trade Zone in August 2006.

“Establishing the operation in China was not as difficult as many people think because I was fortunate to have the right people around me, including a capable personal assistant and experienced factory manager who interpret everything intelligently and use their judgment,” said Castner.

After visiting a number of cities in China, including Shanghai, Wenzhou and Suzhou, Castner finally decided that Shenzhen would be the best location for a modern jewelry factory.

According to Castner, Shenzhen’s main attractions include not only cheap labor, but also skilled personnel well-versed in the latest technology and equipment.

Elegant Gold, which currently employs 26 people, exports jewelry to Australia. It makes earrings, rings, pendants and bracelets from silver and gold, precious stones, pearls and diamonds according to customer requirements.

Castner, who previously manufactured jewelry in Australia, said one of the greatest challenges of moving his business to China was maintaining a seamless and efficient level of service to existing customers.

When he first came to China, he felt he would have to teach workers how to make jewelry for Australian requirements and preferences. He later realized that he didn’t have to do so, because the workers were actually teaching him superior methods of production and finishing.

Castner has been in the jewelry industry for 35 years, and he says his passion has grown since he came to China. “The frustrations in the very beginning provided an extremely steep learning curve for a new foreigner with a totally committed project, and there have been many hardships and negatives, but I believe its been worthwhile and I am looking forward to substantial growth over the next two years,” Castner said.

He added that there were some uncertainties in the jewelry industry because of rising gold prices worldwide. To reduce its dependence on gold, Elegant Gold also makes many products from sterling silver.
